Releasing Artist's Curse
So it's that time of the year again, and KenneyJam 2020 is on. I'm writing this with an hour before the deadline, desperately hoping that none of my friends find any bugs within the next hour.
This one was an interesting one, with the theme being 'Cursed', my mind instantly went to thoughts on the player being cursed, with their abilities diminished to removed completely. Then I thought about the player being able to curse enemies. I had a possession-type game in mind, think Super Mario Odyssey. But in the end I thought about my own journey making games. I've never officially released a game before on Steam, the App Store, the Google Play Store, I've never thought any of my games were good enough. So with this in mind I decided to create a narrative game about this curse. The curse of the artist.
Game developers are artists, no matter what sort of game you're making. From the simplest 2048 clones, to your RPG magnum opus, each game is important to whoever made it. And as developers we can only hope that our creations will be equally as important to those who play them. Our games reflect us, and in essence are an extension of us, a way of expressing ourselves. Yes, even 2048 clones.
Video games are hard to create, and even harder to release. How can you look at something you put your soul into and say "Yes, you are enough". We constantly overthink our creations, wishing we had spent a little bit longer on a feature, made something differently, or were just better at what we do. And even constructive criticism can feel personal. But we don't make games for recognition and fame. We make them because that's what we love to do.
Is it really that deep? Maybe not. Maybe making video games is just a hobby, and for those of us lucky enough, a career. But when a single person smiles when playing our games, we know it was all worth it.
